can I sharpen my machete with a standard kitchen knife sharpener?

My machete came dull so I used the only sharpener I have- the kitchen sharpener. It’s the kind you set on the counter and hold the blade perpendicular while dragging it thru the notch with light to moderate pressure. It did sharpen the blade… a bit. Just wondering if there’s any reason I wouldn’t want to do it this way. Thanks!

The device you use in the kitchen is for "honing" blades, not sharpening them, which is a big difference. Honing simply realigns all the micro-serrations on the blade, i.e. it lines the microscopically jagged edge of the blade back up into a relatively straight line, which makes it cut more efficiently and seem sharper. If you beat your machete blade up and the blade is actually dull (i.e. the blade edge has become rounded) you will need to remove material to get back the nice blade edge, also known as "sharpening". This cannot be done with the device used to hone kitchen knives. Just as you would with kitchen knives when they need sharpened, you will have to use a grinder or stone to sharpen the machete. This can be more damaging to the blade than helpful if you dont know what you are doing, so it is usually better to find someone in your area that does this….there are usually people that sharpen tool and mower blades professionally, often for very very cheap (just a few dollars per knife).
